Many of our patients are on the hunt for a more natural, eco-friendly way to brush their teeth. Here at Signature Smiles Dental in Streetsboro, we believe that most store-bought toothpastes are effective in keeping your teeth and gums healthy. However, we do have some advice for those of you who are looking for a homemade toothpaste option.
Simple, One-Use Toothpaste
Perhaps you’ve just run out of toothpaste. No time to go to the store? Here’s a quick one-use toothpaste recipe! Of course, feel free to make this in larger batches if it’s the recipe that’s right for you!
Ingredients:
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp sea salt
- 1 drop essential oil (try rosemary!)
- water as needed
Animal Lover’s Toothpaste
Many people want a toothpaste that’s eco-friendly and animal-free. Whether for health or political reasons, here’s our recipe for an animal-free toothpaste. This toothpaste is also great because it tends to be thicker than other recipes. Most people have a strong preference when it comes to toothpaste textures!
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp vegetable glycerin
- 4 tbsp baking soda
- 1 tsp guar gum
- 10 drops essential oil (we like peppermint for this one)
- 1/8 cup water
Healthy Minimal Toothpaste
For a simple yet effective recipe, try using a base of coconut oil. The texture of this one can throw people off, but it’s a great one to stick with and get used to.
Ingredients:
- 6 tsp baking soda
- 2 tsp sea salt
- 2 tbsp coconut oil (warmed)
- 10 drops essential oil (Lavender, perhaps?)
DIY Toothpaste Dont’s
We get a lot of questions from patients who want to make sure they’re doing it right. Here’s what not to do when making your own toothpaste at home.
- DON’T use hydrogen peroxide
- DON’T dip your toothbrush into your toothpaste – use an applicator
- DON’T use homemade toothpaste if your dentist recommends against it
