If you have small gaps, chips, cracks, oddly shaped or sized teeth, or discoloration, you may want veneers to correct the problem. They act like little, bonded tooth shields that alter the appearance of your teeth. At Signature Smiles Dental, serving Streetsboro, Elyria, and the surrounding Ohio areas, you have the option of Lumineers and porcelain veneers, both having its own share of benefits.

Material

A traditional veneer consists of porcelain – a translucent ceramic. Lumineers, on the other hand, consist of Cerinate – a patented ceramic.

Process

The process is another factor to consider when choosing between the two. With porcelain veneers, your dentist has to remove some of your existing teeth to place the veneer. The part of your tooth is removed whenever your dentist creates the mold for your veneers. You’ll have a temporary veneer placed on your teeth until your next appointment.

With Lumineers, your dentist doesn’t remove any of your own teeth. You receive your fitting at your first appointment and return to have the veneers placed directly on your teeth.

Time

If time is a concern, you may want to consider Lumineers. Since you don’t have to undergo the process of removing any of your natural teeth, Lumineers take less time to position.

Size

Lumineers are thinner than porcelain veneers. Although porcelain ones are thin as well, Lumineers are thinner, and therefore, less conspicuous.

Appearance

When you compare appearance, Lumineers look more natural. That’s because they’re more translucent than porcelain. Porcelain veneers do a better job of hiding stained teeth, though.

Permanency

Lumineers are only semi-permanent, which means your dentist can remove them. Porcelain ones, however, are permanent.

Longevity

Lumineers’ manufacturer claims this option can last up to 20 years, but some patients only have them for 10. Porcelain veneers tend to last anywhere from eight to 10 years but can last up to 20 in some cases.

Price

If the price is a concern, Lumineers are less expensive than porcelain veneers.

Both porcelain veneers and Lumineers have their benefits. It depends on your particular needs, which one will work best for you.
